A hot water tank, or storage water heater, is an insulated steel tank that keeps water hot and ready at house pressure. Cold water enters at the bottom through a dip tube, a gas burner, electric elements or a heat pump heats it, and hot water leaves from the top. In Canada most homes use gas or electric tanks; tankless and heat pump units are the main alternatives.
